May the Cods be with you

May has really turned up the heat for topwater Cod fishing, with some incredible results coming from anglers braving the cooler conditions. It’s that time of year when persistence, the right handmade fishing lures, and a bit of luck combine to deliver unforgettable Murray Cod action.

Here’s a selection of photos from customers who ventured out and were rewarded for their efforts. Mick, for example, landed an impressive 105cm Cod just a week after catching a 102cm Cod, both using the White Ghost Codmotion. The consistency and performance of this custom lure show why quality fishing lures Australia anglers can rely on make such a difference when targeting trophy Cod.

Jonathan has also been getting in on the action, catching several Cod before stepping things up and smashing his personal best with a beautiful sweetwater Cod, also landed on the White Ghost Codmotion. It’s a testament to the effectiveness of handcrafted fishing gear and how precision lure design can transform a good session into a record-breaking one.

These catches highlight not only the quality of the Codmotion lures but also the rewards of persistence, knowledge of the waterways, and using carefully crafted timber lures designed for serious freshwater fishing. As the season continues, I’ll be sharing more stories, photos, and updates from anglers putting these lures to the test across Australia’s top Cod fisheries.

Road Trip

Last week we had a flash flood on our local river. The river rose 4 times its normal high in a few hours. Chris and I fished it the afternoon of the flood but the water was dirty like we have never seen before.

No fish landed

The next day I was on a road trip to the capital city to test out a new Jointed Codmotion. But knowing the local was in flood I had to make a detour on the way. Lucky the Cod gear was packed as the river was still dirty (must of been doing some works upstream) Anyway I used a Codmotion to see if I could wake them up.
Ended the quick session with two nice Bass taken on a larger than normal bass lure (time to start thinking again)

In the car and off for the long drive. Lucky the patrol has enough room in the back for a bed as this is where I would be sleeping for the night. Music full and a can of energy drink and the trip was sweet.

Next morning meet up with a good friend and in search of Cod we went. we fished hard and long and ended the day with two Cod (one each) and a Yellow belly.

Back in the car for the long trip home but again a detour and a quick Bass fish. This time the river was back to normal hight but still running dirty. No fish MMMMMMMMMM
Thats fishing

The one and only Codmotion

102cm of sweetwater Cod taken by Mick Haines on one of the first Codmotions. This lure has seen its fair share of Cod over the last 12months.

Waking Wiggle

Have found my love for fly fishing again.

The standard Bass flys are along the popper style. After many years chasing my local Bass on lures you understand what they like, and poppers are not on the list.
So the Waking Wiggle was developed to produce a Wake across the surface on a constant retrieve. This has been a winner.
Based along the line of the wiggle minnow but some tweaks

Ian Millers Pack Freak

As many already know I got Ian Miller to build a custom pack rod for me. The requirements were.
Under 6ft total length
4pc
line 2-4kg
leader upto 20lb (helps with guide sizing)
Reel 1000 size shimano
Minimal simple looking

Ian came back with a list of a few blanks and the stats some sounded good other didnt (more trout rods in Ian words)

Over a few months of this and that a rod lands at my door step. WOW

This is a TRUE BASS PACK ROD, not a noodle like some 4pc rods. It has some tip but a heap of grunt to pull our bronze friends from the danger zone.
Ian sent me the reel seat to Marble the same way I do some lures. This was not a easy task but came out sweet if I do say so.

So how does it fish???????????????
Last night was the first chance to get out and give it a good testing. The conditions were just the way I like it. Rain, 30nts of wind and the Bar dropping.

Ended the night with close to 13 fish between Chris and I with some crackers.

SUP Bream-in

Had a crazy session on the Bream with many fish falling for the new Walking Stick and the Running Minnow. This was a rehab outing (so I like to call it) Ive got a standup paddle board to help strengthen my core after a spinal operation a few months back. After a few day of just paddling it was time to fish from the thing.

Before you ask no I did not fall in BUT came very close at one stage.

Sorry for the pics as I didn't take the good camera due to the high risk of falling in plus things get wet.

Sweeeeeeeetwater Cracker

We hit Google maps and found a new section of water we have never fished. We were shocked by the size and numbers of the Bass in such a tight water.

Mini Jimma

This lure is a down sized Jimma (Jewfish lure) Overall length of 80mm and weighing in at 25g. Over the last few weeks testing this lure out its become a, mmmmmmmmmm all most goto lure. The first prototype caught a few nice Bass than was crunched and taken to the Bass Gods. This was a super wipe out that had to been seen to believe.  Anyway the next batch sore more Bass jump over it. but in the smaller size

This was a test run at some old school Matt Black
